Someone asked me recently where I found out about the list I use to know which vegetables and fruits are highest in pesticides.
For example, bananas are not worth buying organic but carrots and spinach are.
The list is here…. Scroll down halfway through the page to get the guide.
For the record, the best prices are at 2 places for organic vegetables/fruits
1) Trader Joes
2) Your Farmers Market (you can talk people down at the end of the day or some bigger farmers markets have great prices)
This year I have also found people through the Farmer Market Bulletin and Craigslist that grow their own food. I have bought figs, picked collards and have a great egg source. And I think I will be buying some pecans for 2.50 a pound cracked next week.
Secondly I read a disturbing article today about organic meat from France that
had melamine in it. One way to combat this in your household is to try the 100 mile diet. Its eating within a 100 mile radius (personally I have not done this but we can all aim a little higher?) Now mind you Trader Joes and the Farmers Markets (again your market may vary)are not getting their veggies nearby necessarily however when it comes meats and dairy you might want to see if you can
get to know your people. I get grass fed ground beef for 2.69 a pound and I have met the farmer who raises them. And I know the man who runs his raw milk dairy.
Kinda neat huh?
