Eating & Healthy Shopping at Aldi

For the most part the changes have been positive. Aldi has been increasing their line of organic products in their stores, especially so in the past 5 months. I have been super impressed with this and appreciate the less store juggling I have to do every month. Here is a list of organic products and just generally healthy products (less to no processing) I have found. By no means is this list exhaustive. Your local Aldi may not carry all of these or it may carry more. I also wrote a post about “What’s Worth Buying At Aldi” reporting all their prices on the groceries I regularly buy.

The Aldi organic label is called Simply Nature.

Organic Agave Nectar 11.75 oz $2.49

Organic Spinach 5oz. $2.49

Refrigerated Almond Milk Half Gallon $2.49 (not organic however they do carry Organic Soymilk in Vanilla and Plain)

Organic Apples 3lb $4.69 ($1 more than Trader Joe’s per lb right now)

Oscar Meyer Angus Beef Hot Dogs Nitrite Free $2.99 (wow, on special)

Extra Fine Green Beans Frozen (compare to Trader Joes) $1.49

Instant Brown Rice $1.49 (great price, Minute Rice at Kroger was $2.49)

Old Fashioned Rolled Oats $2.19 (price change WAS $1.99 last year)

Roasted Salted Almonds 12oz  $4.29

Kidney Beans Can $.59 (their cans are lined with BPA plastic, so not the best)

Black Beans Can $.59 (their cans are lined with BPA plastic, so not the best)

Sweet Potato Chips $1.99

Hummus Quartet 4 Flavor Sampler $3.99

I have been loving Aldi Hummus lately, they have Red Pepper Hummus, Garlic Hummus and Regular Hummus for $1.99

They also have changed their stores around lately. So if you go give yourself a little more time to find what you are looking for. Aldi truly is awesome. They also carry delicious coffee, half n half, lunch meat (no nitrite free yet), imported cheeses, cheap cereal, grits, butter, salad dressings and everything you need for baking. Since they opened an Aldi I RARELY go to Publix or Kroger anymore. It’s just Trader Joes and Aldi for me!

But less Trader Joes with the increase of Aldi organics!

What do you like to buy at Aldi? Leave your favorite Aldi product or price in the comments.

PS Aldi did not pay me for this post however if you represent Aldi, I would say the same thing to you that I would say to the Land o Lakes company. YES! Contact me for sponsorship!

Free Food Chick-fil-A-Cow Appreciation Day-Friday July 13

This is exciting. Every year we do it. Our family of five costs about $22 to eat at Chick-fil-A. So this is rocking!  It’s Free Food for Cow Appreciation Day at Chick-fil-A today!

Click on Cow to go to the Chick-fil-A FAQ about Cow Appreciation Day

You have two options.

Chicken or Brave.

If you are chicken you can just wear  one article of clothing and get a free sandwich/entree.

Chick-fil-A Costume Kit PDF

It’s difficult getting those things to stick, car seat buckles get in the way and then finally some kids are not keen on dressing  up. So I have two tips for you.

ZombieMommyTip#1: Print out kit and then bring scissors and tape with you. Cut out pieces right before you walk in and tape them on.

ZombieMommyTip#2: Bring hats, you can stick cow ears and noses to them.

Really.

Avoid the tears. Just do it in the parking lot.

Trust me.

A whole lot less fighting.

But if you are Brave, you can don the full outfit.

You can do BRAVE. I would say 70% of the people walking in dress up. It’s FREE FOOD!

It is fun watching people and their outfits. Some people are low key, just a hat with ears.

But some are full on crazy. Last time roving groups of teens came in and even a daycare next door showed up.

My favorite was the teacher with the Afro and medical plastic glove blown up and attached to her belly.

Are you planning on dressing up this year?

Secrets to Cooking Kid-Friendly Health Food

It’s no secret that most kids don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.  Children’s taste buds are more sensitive than adults’, so bitter tastes and dry textures are less appealing. They prefer processed, chemically flavored foods over healthier, “real” options.

But with childhood obesity on the rise, you know how important it is to introduce healthy eating habits at a young age. The good news is your child’s palate can adapt after just a few taste-tests. If you’re trying to sway your kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, little “green” lies can help you sneak them in without a struggle. Disguise good-for-you greens with these healthy cooking secrets and recipe ideas:

Purée-fy sweet treats. Puréed fruits and vegetables can be easily added to baked goods. This not only adds nutrients but it also creates a nice, creamy texture – great for cakes, muffins, breads, brownies and cookies. While some recipes actually require fruits and vegetables (think zucchini bread and carrot cake), you can add purées to other desserts and dishes for a nutritious boost.

Brownies with a boost pureed food to fool kids

Try it: Brownies with a Boost

½ cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted
½ cup carrot puree
½ cup spinach puree
½ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 large egg whites
¾ cup oat flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt

Directions: Preheat oven to 325˚F. In a large bowl, mix together melted chocolate, vegetable purees, sugar, cocoa powder, coconut oil and vanilla extract. Whisk in egg whites. Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix well. Pour batter into a greased 8×8-inch baking pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool completely before serving.

Get saucy and spread the love. There are some comfort foods kids constantly request. Unfortunately, they rarely fall into the “healthy” category. To trick your kids’ taste buds, incorporate fruits or vegetables into their favorite dishes with sauces, spreads and other toppings.  For example, drizzle fresh blueberry sauce over pancakes instead of syrup. Here’s an easy, “green” recipe you can use as a dip or sandwich spread:

Guacamole with a pea puree fool kids to eat more vegetables

Try it: Greener Guacamole

3 medium avocados, peeled and pit removed
1 cup sweet pea purée
½ green bell pepper, diced
Fresh lime juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions: Scoop out avocado “meat” and add to a medium bowl. Mash the avocados and mix in sweet pea puree. Fold in diced bell pepper. Squeeze in fresh lime juice and add salt and pepper to taste.

Shape up. Sometimes, just the way food is arranged can increase its appeal factor. Sliced, diced or creatively cut fruits and veggies can be shaped into happy characters or kid-friendly items (boats, bugs, etc.) that transform basic lunch box meals into a fun (and healthy!) eating experience. Your little one will be pleasantly surprised – not to mention the talk of the table. They can pitch in, too! Letting kids play with food is OK when they’re being creative and learning that even healthy foods can be fun. This lady bug sandwich is totally buzz-worthy:

This is a real ladybug, not one you would eat. But you get the picture.

Try it: Lady Bug Lunch Box

  1. Craft a tasty sandwich (PB&J, turkey, veggie, etc.) and remove the crust.
  2. Cut the sandwich to form the body of the lady bug – don’t forget to include its head.
  3. Take one large, round slice of cheese and lob off a small portion to create a straight edge – these will be its “wings.”
  4. Slice the cheese down the middle to separate the wings; then cut out holes to make the trademark spots.
  5. Use olive slices as eyes and watch the lady bug take shape.

Do you love Hot Dogs? Man Gift Stuff! Check out all the cool Hot Dog stuff they make these days

I love hot dogs. Really. A few years ago we had a hot dog contest. We taste tested hotdogs!

We cooked up Whole Food dogs, Hebrew National, Sabrett Dogs, Applewood Farm naturals, Trader Joe Naturals, Ballpark and plain ol Kroger brand. Can you guess which we actually spit out of our mouths?

Hot dog taste test

It was a blind taste test.

After several rounds of measuring back and forth, a winner emerged.

Hebrew National!

Close behind was Sabretts and the Whole Food 365 dogs.

And yes, the Kroger brand dogs went into the spittoon.

I was on Amazon and just for fun did a search on hotdogs. I didn’t know they had so many neat hotdog items! This is seriously retro and seriously cute. If I had miles of space on my counter I think this one would earn a spot.

Nostalgia Hot Dog Roller $48.99 Amazon

Or how about a cookbook! The Great American Hot Dog Book, The: Recipes and Side Dishes from Across America!

The Hot Dog Book $10.19

And finally, yes this is for real.

Hot Dog Raft

Amazon Hot Dog Raft! Only $156! :)

The History of Hot Dogs!

I love hot dogs

Hot Diggity Dog The History of the Hot Dog $13.96

yes gummi hot dogs

Gummi Hot Dogs! $9.20

HOT Britax Sale Boulevard $219.99 Free Shipping

Okay this is $20 bucks cheaper than a month ago ($239). The price went up by 20 at Amazon to $259 and now back down to the $219!

Onyx and Aztec are the two colors on sale.

This is the higher rated Britax Boulevard. Which has better safety protection than the Marathon.

Aztec Brown Boulevard

The Boulevard is a little bigger than the Marathon but it has the added head wings protection. We drive a lot in Atlanta and well we are just very safety conscious about our kids car seats.

I really wanted this in Pink but for this price, hey baby I will take it!

Super Saturday Savings Tip 6/30-Stamps!

Stamps!

Yes you heard me. Stamps.

There is this joke I heard a comic say once. “You mean for 42 cents I can get you to take a piece of paper from my house and get it all the way the across the country to someone else’s house? I can’t even get my 3 year old to cross a room for a $1.00″ Or something like that.

This week, I realized the value of having stamps. My tag was due on the car. I could walk it into the tag office, which in most cities is a hassle, but my local tag office is actually nice and no lines. Or I could mail it.I hemmed and hawed. I was out of stamps. I ended up loading the kids into the car and driving there.  Four car seats, unloaded and loaded. Argh. I could of saved all that hassle if I would of had stamps at home. How about you need to hand someone a card or piece of paper at church, what do you do on Sunday? Go looking for them. Why not just mail it?

And here is the funny thing. People like mail! My grandma loves mail. LOVEs it. You can hear me in a letter. She can’t hear that well on the phone, so conversations tend to be one sided, she will just talk since she can’t hear me anyways. Which is fine, I hear my voice all day long.

:) You can get stamps at the checkout of some grocery stores (not Aldi unfortunately) and you can order online.

Easy!
